Christopher Alan Lewis is a Reader in Psychology at the University of Ulster at Magee College.  He holds degrees in psychology (BSc, MPhil, DPhil) and education (PGCUT, PGDIP, MSc) from the University of Ulster, and in theology and religious studies (MA) from Bangor University.  He is a Registered Psychologist and Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI), and a Chartered Health Psychologist, Chartered Scientist, and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS).  He is a Visiting Fellow at the School of Psychology, University of Leicester, and a Research Associate at INCORE, United Nations University.

Chris was appointed Lecturer at the University of Ulster in 1993, became a Senior Lecturer in 2004, and Reader in 2007.  He teaches courses on individual differences, developmental psychology, introduction to psychology, and the psychology of religion. He is currently chair of the Professional Doctorate Steering  Committee.

Chris is Editor of the Irish Journal of Psychology, the Co-editor of the journal Mental Health, Religion and Culture, is a Consulting Editor of the Journal of Social Psychology and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Beliefs and Values, and the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction.  He reviews for a wide range of journals and grant awarding bodies.

His research interests are: psychology of religion, psychology of peace, conflict and violence, positive psychology, and individual differences.  Currently he has 8 PhD students working in these areas (plus 7 successful completions and 1 further awaiting examination), PSI Clinical Diploma (2 completions), MRes (2) completions MSc (1 completion). Chris has published over 170 articles, 26 book chapters, and 6 books.  He has presented over 250 conference papers at National / International  level (American Psychology Association, British Psychology Society,  European Federation of Professional Psychologists Associations, Psychology Society of Ireland) and as sub-discipline level (Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, International Association for the Psychology of Religion).  He has given talks at various university departments.

He is currently serving as external examiner for the MA Psychology of Religion and the psychology strands of the BA (Hons) Psychology and Philosophy, and BA (Hons) Psychology and Religious Studies at Heythrop College, University of London. He is also external for the BA (Hons) Pastoral Care and BA (Hons) Combined Studies course at Havering College and William Booth College.

He has served as external examiner for over 20 PhD  thesis at various universities (e.g., University of Wales, Bangor; University of Essex; University College London; Sheffield Hallam University; University of Wales, Lampeter; Heythrop College, University of London; Kings College, University of London; Royal Holloway, University of London; University of Liverpool; Open University; Masaryk University (CZ); Plymouth University).

He has served on Council for the BPS, and is currently on the Standing Conference Committee (BPS).  He has also served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Northern Ireland Branch of the BPS. In 2005 Chris became the Membership Secretary of PSI and was appointed to Council.  He also serves on the External Relations Panel of PSI and the Conference Committee. In 2006 Chris was appointed as PSI representative to the European Federation of Professional Psychologists Associations (EFPA) General Assembly and also to the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS).  Finally, Chris is actively involved in the British and East European Psychology Group  running their Jiscmail mailing list.
